This small-scale tented camp is ideally situated right in riverbend on the banks of the Talek River. It’s open from June - March and only a twenty-minute drive from the Ol Kiombo airstrip. More importantly in terms of your safari endeavours... it’s located a mere 150 meters away from one of main locations where migrating herds embark on their perilous river crossing. Located in the southern part of the Musiara sector, in the heart of the Masai Mara National Reserve, the Rekero Camp is the ideal starting point for adventurous safari activities to all corners of the national reserve. However, you really don’t even need to leave the camp to spot a wide range of animals. Just open your front tent’s hatch, have a seat, sip on a cold drink and there you go... wildlife at your doorstep. When you’re in the mood for some company, you can also choose the comfort of the communal decks for sharing safari stories with other guests while sipping on a glass of fine wine.
Rekero camp’s muted khaki-hued tents with en-suite bathrooms, flushing toilets and hot-water showers are understated and blend into the landscape perfectly. By blending into its surroundings, wildlife tends to venture into the surrounding area more comfortably. This makes for even better wildlife-viewing from within the camp. Rekero’s nine elegant tents are comfortably outfitted with all the creature comforts of home. The riverside tents, two of which suitable for families, look out upon the sweeping African plains. These vast plains are thick with wildebeest during migration season. Rekero has two communal decks, one featuring a canvassed lounge and a dining area. The other deck is slightly smaller and has stylish comfy couches where you can enjoy a quiet sundowner. Breakfast and lunch are generally served on long communal tables on the main deck. At the end of the day, palate-pleasing dinners are served by fireside... with a side of safari-stories shared with fellow travelers.
Rekero’s tents are spaced well apart along the riverbank, ensuring your privacy and a feeling of exclusivity. Shaded by tall trees, the tents overlook the wooded banks of the Talek River. Each tent is accessible by its own private path to the tented camp’s main path. The tents have screened windows that open up for a little fresh air. The surrounding bush will ensure a sense of privacy from your neighbors. At the front of each tent there’s a screened in front tent area containing a day bed, two director’s chairs and a card table. Simply lift the screens of the front tent and a view of the Talek River awaits.
Activities at Rekero Camp
Most activities at Rekero are related to wildlife-viewing. Here’s what a typical day at Rekero Camp could look like for you. Since dusk and dawn are the best times to see wildlife, you’ll want to start the day off with an early morning wake up call. After a quiet cup of coffee while looking out across the murky river waters, a lovely breakfast awaits (or if your stomach isn’t awake yet, you can ask for a packed picnic to take along with you). One of the camp’s very reputable Maasai guides with detailed knowledge of the land and wildlife will be waiting for you after breakfast. Just around first light you’ll step into an open-sided or fully enclosed safari jeep for an adventurous morning game drive. After a few hours of spotting all kinds of wild animals, you’ll eventually arrive back at camp around mid-morning. After a bit of freshening up, a lovely lunch will await you. After lunch, there’s some downtime for a quick nap, some reading, or just a nice drink and a bit of wildlife spotting from a comfortable chair. After an afternoon tea you can head off for an evening game drive and sundowners. By the time you return to camp, the campfire will be roaring and a tasty dinner will await you.
In addition to game drives, the camp also offers nature walks, bush picnics, visits to local villages and trips to a local school. If you’re travelling with kids, they can also learn how to make a bow-and arrow and learn how to use it. For a above and beyond safari experience you can also book a hot air balloon ride (a surcharge applies).

Tripadvisor comments Rekero Camp
The camp itself is amazing and it’s hard to imagine finding a nicer place for a trip like this. But people can make all the difference and everyone at Rekero really made our experience incomparable to any other trip we’ve taken. Richard and Peter (the camp managers) were beyond gracious hosts. They were so friendly it was very much like visiting old friends. Frankly, they ran everything so well we barely needed to ask for anything at all. It was like they knew us well enough to anticipate everything we might want. But they happily accommodated any request we managed to think of as well.

Rekero Camp is in the best location in the Masai Mara...right on the river. Watching game come down to drink or cross is amazing. Rooms are large and cozy at the same time. Bonfires in the evening are magical. Staff was knowledgeable, friendly, and welcoming.
Would definitely come back and bring others!
