Embrace your inner adventurer at a traditional safari camp

Reminiscent of the 1920s, Karen Blixen Camp is beautiful, comfortable and a throwback to yesteryears. The home of the traditional African safari, Karen Blixen Camp welcomes elephants, giraffes, zebras and impalas who come to find water and refreshments. You may also spot hippos and other animals who pass Karen Blixen Camp to enjoy a well-deserved rest in the adjacent river.

Each tent is raised on a platform and spaced along the riverbank with a large private deck that affords guests once-in-a-lifetime views of hippos and birds as they enjoy a stomp around in the refreshing water. Made from canvas, the tents at Karen Blixen Camp are the perfect place to relax and unwind with nothing but the sound of the flowing river and the chorus of birdsong to interrupt your reverie. Persian rugs and dark wood floors exude luxury in a simplistic yet sophisticated tent where guests feel comfortable and cosy away from the hot African sun. Every tent has a double or twin bed along with a comfortable daybed, armchair, and an en-suite bathroom with an outdoor shower. Family tents are also available and comprise two tents with a shared deck.

Solar-powered and eco-friendly, Karen Blixen Camp is conscious of the local environment and takes significant steps to protect and conserve it. From the IT education project to foreign language and literacy courses, Karen Blixen Camp takes pride in the support it offers to the local Maasai community. As part of the camp’s eco-conscious initiatives, you are encouraged to plant a tree on the camp’s grounds – a small fee applies.

Guests at Karen Blixen are welcome to use the high-quality facilities which include a large swimming pool with sun loungers where families love to splash without a care in the world. Karen Blixen Camp is also home to a spa and a gift shop, offering a range of goods and services to contribute to a memorable trip. Complete with a spacious restaurant, reception, lounge and bar, Karen Blixen Camp has every amenity that guests could hope for.

Meals at Karen Blixen Camp are served in the bush garden, where you can glimpse the action at the Mara River. An open-plan mess area overlooks a popular hippo area where guests watch the local wildlife as they enjoy a sunset tipple. The chefs at Karen Blixen take inspiration from various cuisines and use fresh herbs and flowers from the camp’s organic garden to prepare Fresh, English, Italian, Danish and African delights.

Activities at Karen Blixen Camp

No stay at the Karen Blixen Camp is complete without participating in a game drive. Each stay includes both a morning and evening game drive through the Mara North Conservancy with the option of driving into the Masai Mara National Reserve proper to witness the famous Great Migration. Groups are limited to six people for intimate sightings of Leopard Gorge, endangered African wild dogs and lots of big cats. As the sun sets and the stars make their first appearance, night game drives allow guests to experience the thrill of the African wilderness after lights out. After an exhilarating trip, guests will return to camp for a late dinner next to a toasty fireplace underneath the stars where friends can exchange stories of an action-packed day in the savannah.

For an additional cost, guests are welcome to join a local guide on foot for a walking safari or nature walk through the conservancy, where there is an abundance of bird life and smaller wildlife to explore. On the walk, guests will learn about the local area and how the indigenous plants are used by locals for medicinal and ritualistic purposes.

Guests can also experience nature from a bird’s perspective in a high-flying hot-air balloon soaring across the magnificent African savannah (at an additional cost). Starting the adventure of a lifetime as the sun is just awakening, guests will climb up into the basket as it leaves the ground to explore the stunning Mara North Conservancy from above.

After an action-packed trip, guests at the Karen Blixen Camp can enjoy a day of relaxation and rejuvenation at the camp’s spa, where a variety of wellness treatments from experienced therapists trained in the centuries-old practice of African Kukanda massage are available. Relaxing in the privacy of your own outdoor veranda, guests can choose from facial massages, head and neck massages and more. The camp’s pristine swimming pool offers another great way to recharge and enjoy the fantastic views whilst regenerating under the graceful acacia and olive trees before heading out for the second game drive of the day.

Tripadvisor comments Karen Blixen Camp

Imagine a Jeep safari. Give it a 5/5. Karen Blixen Camp was beyond our imagination - a 10/5. They went over and above to make our dreams come true. Long drives if wanted, surprise bush meals, village visits. Truly was an epic natural and cultural experience.

We had a fantastic trip! We saw more animals activity (lions feasting on a water buffalo!) during our safaris than we could have hoped for. Staying at the Karen Blixen Camp was a bonus! The staff was attentive, kind & absolutely accommodating. We felt well taken care of
